So, when is Christmas music appropriate? It seems to be a pervasive question these days. Halloween decorations are down for about 15 minutes before scarecrows turn into Santa’s and candy colors mysteriously turn from black and orange to red and white. It begs the question - what role does the repetition of seasons play in our daily lives? More than that, how might we Christians understand the holiday of Christmas in the midst of all the cultural fluff around it?
Judging from the drift of fallen leaves blowing across the icy landscape of my backyard, not even nature can really tell what time it is these days! As we set our sights on enjoying Thanksgiving this year, we do so on the edge of the old Christian season of Advent, a liturgical meditation on the incarnation which anticipates Christ’s return. Here at Coram Deo, we will look through various passages in both Old and New Testaments to get a clearer picture of the Son made flesh - so that we might understand better what it is for us to be in Christ in the midst of a befuddling world.
