We have spent the past several weeks discussing the biblical teaching on sexuality and some of the surrounding issues within our current context. Originally, when I sat down to write this I had the hopes of suggesting books and articles for further reading - but the vast amount of ink spilled on the particular sticking point of homosexual sin and temptations contains such a varied range of quality that it is difficult to whole-heartedly recommend any one text, aside from Scripture itself.
Of course, our system of doctrine contained within the Westminster Standards supply such a wonderfully accurate distillation of faithfully referenced scripture that I am confident that we are well equipped to prayerfully engage the matter. Should any of us encounter a friend or family member struggling in these areas, I do heartily recommend the PCA Ad Interim Report on Human Sexuality as a resource that faithfully approaches matters of biblical doctrine and its application in “real-world” situations. I would add, that beyond a firm grasp on the topic itself, we also need to keep a steady eye on the heart of God so that we might begin to embrace and embody the content of scripture according to the character of God revealed in Christ. To that end I recommend “Gentle and Lowly” by Dane Ortlund and “The Intolerance of Tolerance” by D.A Carson.
