In Matthew 5:33-37, Jesus addresses issues about our speech according to Leviticus 19:12. Applying this passage correctly is a bit of a puzzle inasmuch as we see oaths taken all throughout scripture, and in our daily lives. The Elders and Deacons took vows of office during their installation - I, myself, have taken vows as a minister. Politicians, witnesses, and medical professionals take vows (often with their hands on Scripture). Marriage vows continue to hold a significant presence in our current culture. Is Jesus saying that all this is bad? First, we should recognize that the presence of any oath admits the reality of lies. Second, we should admit we occasionally swear to things not because they are true - but precisely because they aren’t and we hope that our earnestness will obscure the facts. “Mom, I swear I didn’t eat the last piece of cake!” The ESV Expository Commentary observes, “If God’s oaths reveal that humans are accustomed to hearing lies, then oaths, vows, and promises reveal that we are also accustomed to telling lies.” The Bible’s teaching on speech cuts through the heart of every person in the church - not only do we fail with our speech, but we also fail with our silence when speech is needed!
Thank God that we are saved in Jesus Christ: the only human with a pure heart and pure speech - when tempted to lie, or sinfully fall silent we can rest in him and pray that he would give us the courage to live honestly with each other in his presence.
